So you think you can dance

I don’t know how many out in tvlandia watch So You Think You Can Dance… presumably enough that they brought it back for a second season. I didn’t really watch it last year because it was on at a bad time for television viewing for me. But this year I thought I would watch it. After all, last season when I DID watch my daughter really enjoyed watching with me (she always wanted me to vote for whoever was wearing pink). So, anyway I’ve been watching since the beginning of this season, and tonight’s show just made me write a blog. Well, actually my husband made me write a blog because he was tired of me sitting in here saying “But…” “I can’t believe…” “WHY?????”

Let me first say I recorded tonight’s result show. And, wouldn’t you know it, Fox cut off the last minute or so, so the last I SAW Stanislav and Ivan were standing on the stage together, and I thought, “Well, see ya Ivan. You seemed awfully nice. Too bad you had to dance ballroom right off the bat.” So, I came over to my trusty computer to confirm what I knew to be true, and… OUTRAGE!!!! Ivan was asked to stay, and Stanislav was sent packing.

Now, having read some of the boards to find out who was sent home, let me summarize what some think happened (other than my favorite theory– the judges went backstage to smoke crack before they made their decision). One, the prize for this year’s season may make the judges more likely to favor some contestants (this year’s prize is a year contract dancing in Celine Dion’s Las Vegas show). Two, Stanislav wasn’t versatile enough. Now, I know the judges say they were judging on everything up to this point, but, come on– if you want to see if the guy can dance something other than ballroom, here’s a quirky idea– Don’t give him BALLROOM for the first dance he dances. BAH!

Unlike others, I won’t be boycotting the show. After all, there’s still sweet Benji to watch. And Danielle, his partner– I like her, too. So, I’ll continue to watch. But look for future rants here if things don’t go my way.

Dancing With The Stars starts September 12

The more popular the show gets, the more diverse its “stars”. This season, the biggest surprise to me is Jerry Springer. I can’t imagine him being that good, but I may be surprised.

Here is the lineup of the other dancers:

Tucker Carlson– Bowtie wearing news commentator. I would love to see him dance jive or the rumba. He seems so buttoned down. It will be interesting to see how he does with the “groovier” styles of music, if he survives that long.

Vivica Fox– Star of movies, such as Independence Day and Kill Bill. I would imagine she’d be really good. At least she’ll look good in the outfits.

Sara Evans– I didn’t have a clue who she was. She’s a country music singer. The only song that rang a bell with me was “Suds in the Bucket”, which I knew because Kellie Pickler sang it (to not great reviews) on American Idol.

Harry Hamlin– Actor (L.A. Law and Clash of the Titans) and wife to Lisa Renna, former contestant.

Joe Lawrence– I have to assume that this refers to actor “Joey” Lawrence, rather than baseball player Joe Lawrence, but I could be mistaken. I think he could turn out to be another Drew Lachey.

Mario Lopez– He’s one of those stars about whom I think “Oh, yeah… that guy” but couldn’t tell you a thing he’s been in. It’s Saved By the Bell– that’s where you know him from (in case you were wondering). How will he be as a dancer? Hopefully more memorable than as an actor.

Willa Ford– Another “who?” for me. She’s a pop singer, for those (like me) who are clueless, so she ought to at least have some sense of rhythm. And she’s a blonde bombshell, so that might garner her some votes.

Monique Coleman– Again, I didn’t have a clue who she was. She’s a young actress who has worked quite a bit in non-starring roles, everything from Gilmore Girls to High School Musical.

Shanna Moakler– No, I didn’t know who she was, either. Turns out, she’s no stranger to reality television, since she has starred with her soon-to-be-ex husband Travis Barker on MTV’s “Meet the Barkers” (maybe somebody should get a clue that putting your marriage on t.v. may be great for your career but not for your marriage). She’s also a former Miss USA and sometimes actress.

And finally–

Emmitt Smith– Super bowl champion. Will he be able to live up to Jerry Rice’s success? I don’t know. Does he have Jerry Rice’s personality? Because, let’s face it, he primarily advanced as far as he did because he continued to improve, and he seemed like he was such a nice guy– not because he was THAT good.

Who do you think will stand out? Who will go home first? Who are you most excited about? Inquiring minds want to know.

Next Survivor - Tribes to be Divided by Race

I haven’t watched Survivor in years, but they just announced the new cast of Survivor and also an interesting twist. Next season, the tribes are going to be divided by race. Yikes!

You can read more about the division of tribes into races by clicking here.

This move is certain to cause some controversy. Not a bad marketing idea though…

Rockstar Supernova Final Four is Set

Toby sang the encore tonight. He was awesome!

Dilana, Storm and Lukas were in the bottom three tonight. Storm was sent packing and now the final four is set:

Toby, Lukas, Dilana and Magni.

Quite frankly I think that Toby is the best choice to front the band, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lukas win it either. I think that Toby connects better with the audience than anyone left in the competition. On the other hand, watching Lukas reminds me of watching a lot of the old Heavy Metal bands I saw in concert when I was a teenage head banger (back in the day). In other words, Lukas is very entertaining to watch.

So who do you think will wind up fronting Supernova? Let us know by taking our new poll!

Fans petition Pontiac to give Janelle a car

We got an email today from the folks over at TVSmack.com. They want us to spread the news to Big Brother fans– specifically to fans of Janelle Pierzina. What do they want you to do? Contact Pontiac to persuade them to give Janelle a car on the live show. In case you don’t watch Big Brother, Janelle had a chance to win a car in last week’s Head of Household competition, but lost the car to eventual HOH winner Mike “Boogie” Malin. Then she lost her place in the house when he gave her to boot.

The TVSmacksters do have a point. It would have required a virtual miracle for Janelle to beat Mike in that competition, but maybe she should have kept around Dr. Will Kirby. He probably would have been so smug, he might just have let her win the car :)

New shows this season

Is it just me, or does it seem like there are a ton of new shows (and even new networks) this year? We’ve already mentioned the conversion of WB to the CW network. It’s an odd change to me because it’s basically the same shows. Then ABC did a preview night for their new season line up. How desperate are the networks getting?

So far I’ve only watched one new show: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (seriously, they couldn’t think of a shorter, more memorable name?) starring Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford, D.L. Hughley and Amanda Peet (along with a slew of other people that you’ll recognize but won’t remember their names). The basic gist of the show is that the producer of a show (extrmely reminiscent of Saturday Night Live) has a breakdown during the live broadcast, lambasting the media industry for giving into political correctness. He’s fired and the new network president (Amanda Peet) brings in controversial writer/director combo Perry/Whitford to shake things up. It was a pretty good start to the show. I really like Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford, and it seems like they’ve done a good job of writing characters from them that are different enough from their previous memorable television characters that you don’t feel like you’re watching some odd Friends/West Wing combination show (Chandler meets Josh and the two team up to write comedy), but not so different that you can’t buy them in the parts. If you missed the first episode, you can catch up on what you missed on the show’s NBC site.

I’m planning to watch Jericho tonight, as the concept intrigues me (even though The Day After scared me to death when I was younger). Smith is another interesting new offering, but for some reason I’m not interested enough to actually try watching it. I initially thought I would watch Kidnapped, but I’m so tired of the previews already that I think I’ll skip it. You’d think, being from Texas, that I’d be thrilled to watch Friday Night Lights, but I really can’t think of anything I’d rather watch less. It looks like Dawson’s Creek/The O.C. (insert WB teen show here) meets Monday Night Football. Um, no thanks.

So, what new shows are you watching this season? Is there something I’m missing out on?

New Shows on Television

I’ve been checking out the new shows (well, at least a few of them). There are some really good ones this season, although I’ll have to let you know in 6 months whether they’ve managed to hold my attention. So, here’s my brief take on the new shows I’ve checked out so far.

George already mentioned Heroes. I didn’t realize until a couple of weeks ago that this was a superhero show. I’ve watched the previews all summer, and it just looked, well, weird. I thought it was going to be about real life people (not true to life, but written to seem that way) who committed heroic acts. Little did I realize it was going to be about flying people and mirror images that have a life of their own. Anyway, other than being an interesting concept, it’s also fairly well written. It moves along quickly. The characters that are supposed to be likeable seem likeable, so far. There is just enough mystery to keep you guessing and wondering what will happen next, but not so much that the show becomes confusing. So far, after one whole episode, I’d give it a thumbs up. We’ll definitely be watching again.

I missed most of the second episode of Jericho, due to a PVR scheduling mistake, but I really liked the first episode and the last 15 minutes of the second episode. It’s been pretty much non-stop action to this point in the story. Like Lost, I wonder how long you can keep up a storyline for characters who seem to be completely isolated, but Lost has found a way to make it work. The show reminds me of a book called, “Alas, Babylon”, which I enjoyed reading back in high school, so much so that I made my own students read it when I became a teacher. In case you haven’t been watching, the basic jist is that there has been some sort of attack that has wiped out a large number of cities throughout the United States. No one really knows just exactly what has happened because communication with the outside world for the citizens of Jericho, Kansas is pretty much non-existant. I wonder whether it will continue to be as interesting when the radiation storms and escaped convicts have all gone away, and the town is left to try to grow food, find water, and get on with the question of survival. We shall see.

Now this one I said I wasn’t going to watch– yes, I’m talking about Kidnapped. I thought I would just take a peak. You know, find out if it was one long storyline about ONE kidnapping or a different kidnapping every week. Luckily for my already-heightened mother sense of paranoia, it’s about one kidnapping. Since my husband isn’t a bazillionaire with skeletons in the closet who finds it necessary to have a bodyguard for our children, I don’t have to get up extra times to check the locks at night. Unluckily for my television watching schedule, it’s about one kidnapping. You don’t think I can honestly just walk away until I find out whether they save the boy, do you? The first week they needed that hook to get me back. The show dragged and was a bit boring, but the second week was a lot better. I’m still not sure I’ll be watching it by the end of the season– won’t they eventually have to let the boy go home and move on to another kidnapping? But I’m in it until they get the boy home, or until I decide they’re just yanking me around by not getting him home.

And now for my personal favorite of the new season– the show with the impossibly long name: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which I will be referring to simply as Studio 60 from now on (or that show with Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford, or Studio Whatever). I think the show is funny, intelligent, well-written, not quite as left wing as the West Wing (but I’ll keep an eye on that), and just thoroughly enjoyable. Matthew Perry is great. Bradley Whitford is great. The whole cast is great. I don’t really have anything negative to say about the show– except that I really don’t like the name.

Thus far, I would say NBC is the winner with regards to new shows. If you’re interested in any of the shows mentioned but haven’t watched them, don’t despair. Visit the websites for the shows. Many of them have the full episodes, or at least a summary recap on their web pages. As a matter of fact, I’m going to watch Jericho in the next couple of days.

So, let me know– what are you watching? What’s your favorite new show of the season?

Does every show now have to be a serial?

Remember when Alias was such a big deal because it was renewing the idea of a serial? You couldn’t miss an episode or you risked being completely lost. Then came Desperate Housewives and Lost. Lost was at least kind enough to provide periodic episodes that were just for the purpose of catching you up in case YOU had been marooned on an island and missed recent shows.

Now it seems every show must add a serial element. Shows like Ugly Betty, which would be fine with no “mystery” waiting to be solved still have the mystery. So, what is this fascination with the serial?

The serial has been around for a long time. The book Treasure Island was originally written as a newspaper serial, as were several Charles Dickens’ novels. Radio created the “soap opera” a highly dramatic type of serial that later migrated to television. But, other than nighttime soaps, such as Dallas and Knot’s Landing, the serial was not seen as frequently on primetime television in recent years. E.R. has a serial-type style, but I’ve missed whole seasons and not really lost any major plot lines.

But today I can name many serials right off the top of my head: Heroes, Lost, Jericho, Desperate Housewives and Kidnapped, without even stopping to think too hard. One obvious appeal for writers of shows is that they can develop a longer plot line. Audience members are also likely to tune in more often, once they’re “hooked”.

The funny thing is that the networks like the serial, but not TOO much. Alias was watered down after the first season, leaving behind the cliffhanger nature of each episode for a more standard form of show. Some people say that, ultimately, this is what ended Alias’ run– the network kept insisting things be dumbed down more and more (well, that and Jennifer Garner getting married and having a baby), so that the audience wouldn’t get lost. Thankfully, it seems to have paved the way for other shows, such as Lost, to have an easier time of weird and twisting plot lines.

So, I’m all for television serials. I just wish they wouldn’t create serial elements in shows that don’t need it.

The Most Amazing Thing About The Amazing Race

Just when I thought I’d seen it all on the Amazing Race, a team actually behaves in a completely altruistic fashion? On a race for a million dollars? Are you kidding me?

Erwin and Godwin Cho (the Cho brothers), who were in last place, had a chance to go to the fast forward. David and Mary (”Kentucky”) needed to come in first place to avoid being eliminated (as it turns out, they probably could have taken the 30 minute penalty and still have been in the race, but who knew that at the time). So, would their alliance hold up? Or was it going to be a case of one alliance member gets the fast forward, the other goes home?

As it turns out, not only did the Cho brothers allow “Kentucky” to go for the fast forward, they successfully discouraged others from going for it, allowing Kentucky a first place finish and another week in the race.

I have long said that The Amazing Race is interesting because it always seems to bring out either the best or the worst in people (and sometimes both). I have watched teams that I did not enjoy blossom into my favorites and watched my favorites deteriorate into whiny, pushy, bratty or just plain mean “ugly Americans”.

I’ve liked the Chos since the beginning, but I’m really impressed by their ability to stick by their alliance. I’ve honestly never seen an alliance work in The Amazing Race– oh, sure, maybe for one leg or in one competition, but then it’s usually back to “dog eat dog”.

It will be interested to see if the Cho/Bama/Kentucky alliance gets them to the end. And even more interesting to see if one of them will turn on the others before it’s all over. If that happens, my money’s on Bama to be the traitors. But we’ll see… I hope that isn’t the case.

Is The Amazing Race Fixed?

Last year my husband and I joked that The Amazing Race was fixed because every time the hippies were in last place, it was a non-elimination round. Now, history seems to be repeating itself. Even though Kentucky JUST pulled themself up from last place by getting the fast forward last week, this week they ended up at the bottom of the race again. AND… It was a non-elimination round! So, what do you think? Are the non-elimination rounds truly pre-determined OR does the show alter things to allow favorites (or at least more interesting contestants) to stay in the race?

Dancing With The Stars FINALE

So, the votes are in, and we have a winner. Emmitt Smith is this year’s Dancing With the Stars King. And Cheryl Burke has claimed her second title in two years. I wonder whether they’ll saddle her with someone like Master P next year. Congratulations to Emmitt and Cheryl.

Jericho–Next Episode Someone Dies

In last night’s preview for next week’s Jericho (the fall season finale), it was revealed that someone in Jericho will die. So, who will it be? George and I were trying to figure out who was most likely to go, and we said it most likely wouldn’t be a main character. But Lost has taught us that anyone can be fair game.

So, using the Lost formula– does anyone know if any Jericho regulars have recently been convicted of drunk driving or had some other run-in with the law? This seems to be a sure ticket to getting written off of Lost. Will the same hold true for Jericho? I can’t find anyone who has had recent legal troubles. Anyone else know of any?

What about this Lost sign you’re going to die? A whole episode dedicated to flashbacks about you that seem to culminate in you setting the past to rest. Uh oh, Emily.

And the surefire way to tell that you’re going to die on Lost– having an, um, intimate relationship outside the bounds of marriage (is this a television show or a horror movie?). Hmmm. Looks bad for Mary or Eric.

So, who do you think won’t be back in January (or is it February)?

Jericho–Am I the only one who finds Eric and Mary repulsive?

Are we supposed to like them as a couple? Are we supposed to hope he goes back to his pregnant wife? I just feel repulsed whenever I see them together. Am I the only one who feels this way?
