New Shows on Television

I’ve been checking out the new shows (well, at least a few of them). There are some really good ones this season, although I’ll have to let you know in 6 months whether they’ve managed to hold my attention. So, here’s my brief take on the new shows I’ve checked out so far.

George already mentioned Heroes. I didn’t realize until a couple of weeks ago that this was a superhero show. I’ve watched the previews all summer, and it just looked, well, weird. I thought it was going to be about real life people (not true to life, but written to seem that way) who committed heroic acts. Little did I realize it was going to be about flying people and mirror images that have a life of their own. Anyway, other than being an interesting concept, it’s also fairly well written. It moves along quickly. The characters that are supposed to be likeable seem likeable, so far. There is just enough mystery to keep you guessing and wondering what will happen next, but not so much that the show becomes confusing. So far, after one whole episode, I’d give it a thumbs up. We’ll definitely be watching again.

I missed most of the second episode of Jericho, due to a PVR scheduling mistake, but I really liked the first episode and the last 15 minutes of the second episode. It’s been pretty much non-stop action to this point in the story. Like Lost, I wonder how long you can keep up a storyline for characters who seem to be completely isolated, but Lost has found a way to make it work. The show reminds me of a book called, “Alas, Babylon”, which I enjoyed reading back in high school, so much so that I made my own students read it when I became a teacher. In case you haven’t been watching, the basic jist is that there has been some sort of attack that has wiped out a large number of cities throughout the United States. No one really knows just exactly what has happened because communication with the outside world for the citizens of Jericho, Kansas is pretty much non-existant. I wonder whether it will continue to be as interesting when the radiation storms and escaped convicts have all gone away, and the town is left to try to grow food, find water, and get on with the question of survival. We shall see.

Now this one I said I wasn’t going to watch– yes, I’m talking about Kidnapped. I thought I would just take a peak. You know, find out if it was one long storyline about ONE kidnapping or a different kidnapping every week. Luckily for my already-heightened mother sense of paranoia, it’s about one kidnapping. Since my husband isn’t a bazillionaire with skeletons in the closet who finds it necessary to have a bodyguard for our children, I don’t have to get up extra times to check the locks at night. Unluckily for my television watching schedule, it’s about one kidnapping. You don’t think I can honestly just walk away until I find out whether they save the boy, do you? The first week they needed that hook to get me back. The show dragged and was a bit boring, but the second week was a lot better. I’m still not sure I’ll be watching it by the end of the season– won’t they eventually have to let the boy go home and move on to another kidnapping? But I’m in it until they get the boy home, or until I decide they’re just yanking me around by not getting him home.

And now for my personal favorite of the new season– the show with the impossibly long name: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which I will be referring to simply as Studio 60 from now on (or that show with Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford, or Studio Whatever). I think the show is funny, intelligent, well-written, not quite as left wing as the West Wing (but I’ll keep an eye on that), and just thoroughly enjoyable. Matthew Perry is great. Bradley Whitford is great. The whole cast is great. I don’t really have anything negative to say about the show– except that I really don’t like the name.

Thus far, I would say NBC is the winner with regards to new shows. If you’re interested in any of the shows mentioned but haven’t watched them, don’t despair. Visit the websites for the shows. Many of them have the full episodes, or at least a summary recap on their web pages. As a matter of fact, I’m going to watch Jericho in the next couple of days.

So, let me know– what are you watching? What’s your favorite new show of the season?

Heroes is Way Cool!

I mentioned in my last post that I have been very busy with my 9 to 5 job. Well, my wife Jill taped the show Heroes for me last week. We watched it tonight and wow do I like it.

Now, keep in mind that I am a super hero junkie. I collected comic books when I was a kid. Growing up I watched just about every super hero show on tv there was.

So, it’s not surprising that I like the new show Heroes. I think it has a really interesting story line. I am very excited to see where it heads. I might have a new favorite show.

Oh, but I am not sure I like the woman who has the weird shadow thing going on. It’s a little too freaky for my tastes. Otherwise, I love the show so far.

Show me the Shows

Well, my nine to five job has been taking up almost all of my spare time. So here are my brief comments on this weeks tv shows:

Desparate Housewives: Does Bree know how to pick them or what?

Survivor: That was a short social experiment.

Dancing with the Stars: Can you say, “follow the rules”?

LOST: Can hardly wait for the premier.

ER: Less drama please!

7th Heaven: Now that was a sermon!

Those are my main comments for the week. Like I said, I haven’t had time for much TV watching.

Great Story on Dilana Robichaux - Runner up on Rockstar Supernova

I just read this nice article from the Houston Chronicle on Dilana (post Rockstar).

It’s a pretty interesting read. Two of the things I found interesting from the article were this:

Finally she went to the show’s producers and asked, “When are you guys going to have enough? You’ve drawn every bit of blood out of my skin.” She said they told her, “You’re the most interesting person to pick on.”

This just goes to show that when watching reality tv, you have to remember that editing is always done to shape our view on contestants. And the editing usually paints a different picture than “TRUE” reality.

and this:

When Rossi and Rock Star Supernova (the band’s new name, after a legal battle) tour in 2007, Dilana, Magni, Toby and Storm will front Rock Star’s formidable House Band as opening act.

I didn’t realize that not only Dilana, but also Magni, Toby and Storm would be touring with the band formerly known as Supernova. The fans should enjoy that.

LOST Season 3 - 21 Questions I Want Answered

Season 3 of LOST premieres on Wednesday, October 4 at 9/8c. As you must know there are a lot of questions left to answer.

At the end of last season I wrote a post with my top ten questions from season 2 of LOST. Some visitors added to my list of questions with their comments.

So here is an updated list of 21 questions:

1. What is the Dharma Initiative?
2. What is “The Monster”?
3. What does Henry Gale mean when he says, “We’re the good guysl”
4. Does the button really do anything?
5. What is the real purpose of the magnet in the hatch?
6. What is the real purpose of the hatch?
7. Is there only one way off and on the island?
8. What is the history of the giant statue of the four toed foot?
9. Did Desmond cause flight 815 to crash?
10. What was the Big White Light blast towards the end of the season finale?
11. Are there more than one group of “Others” on the island?
12. Who are “The Others”?
13. The “Execute” button serves a purpose. So why wouldn’t the Hanso Foundation people just be up front about it? Why do they have to make it so cryptic and not tell the hatch people what they’re really doing?
14. Why did Henry want Michael to bring Hurley to the Others, only to let him go?
15. What are they going to do with Jack, kate, and Sawyer if they’re not going to kill them?
16. What’s the deal with the huge bird that Hurley thought said his name?
17. Where do the others REALLY live?
18. Was Kelvin an other?
19. Does Penelope (Desmond’s girlfriend) know about the island?
20. What is Henry Gale’s real name?
21. Why do I keep watching a show that gives me more questions than answers?

Anyway, I would like to give a special thanks for the contribitions from panasianbiz in my earlier post.

What are your most pressing questions?

New shows this season

Is it just me, or does it seem like there are a ton of new shows (and even new networks) this year? We’ve already mentioned the conversion of WB to the CW network. It’s an odd change to me because it’s basically the same shows. Then ABC did a preview night for their new season line up. How desperate are the networks getting?

So far I’ve only watched one new show: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (seriously, they couldn’t think of a shorter, more memorable name?) starring Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford, D.L. Hughley and Amanda Peet (along with a slew of other people that you’ll recognize but won’t remember their names). The basic gist of the show is that the producer of a show (extrmely reminiscent of Saturday Night Live) has a breakdown during the live broadcast, lambasting the media industry for giving into political correctness. He’s fired and the new network president (Amanda Peet) brings in controversial writer/director combo Perry/Whitford to shake things up. It was a pretty good start to the show. I really like Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford, and it seems like they’ve done a good job of writing characters from them that are different enough from their previous memorable television characters that you don’t feel like you’re watching some odd Friends/West Wing combination show (Chandler meets Josh and the two team up to write comedy), but not so different that you can’t buy them in the parts. If you missed the first episode, you can catch up on what you missed on the show’s NBC site.

I’m planning to watch Jericho tonight, as the concept intrigues me (even though The Day After scared me to death when I was younger). Smith is another interesting new offering, but for some reason I’m not interested enough to actually try watching it. I initially thought I would watch Kidnapped, but I’m so tired of the previews already that I think I’ll skip it. You’d think, being from Texas, that I’d be thrilled to watch Friday Night Lights, but I really can’t think of anything I’d rather watch less. It looks like Dawson’s Creek/The O.C. (insert WB teen show here) meets Monday Night Football. Um, no thanks.

So, what new shows are you watching this season? Is there something I’m missing out on?

Ryan Star Set to Release Darkhorse CD

According to Rockstar Supernova contestant Ryan Star’s website, he is set to come out with a live CD titled “Darkhorse: A Live Collection”.

It was interesting to see that after he was booted Ryan endorsed Lukas to win. I guess Ryan and Lukas became pals during the show.

Anyway, it’s good to see that Ryan’s carreer is off and running.

Lukas Rossi - The Chosen One

In tonight’s show, Magni went home first. I didn’t really expect him to win, but he was always great vocally.

Toby was sent home next. I personally would have liked to see Toby win it, but Toby did have a problem with consitency, and I think the band probably made the right choice.

Then Tommy Lee announced that their band was going to listen to their fans and they were going to take the one who got the most fan votes last night. Which was…

Lukas Rossi

I am fairly sure that if he had not received the most fan votes he still would have won.

It was not too surprising that he won. Lukas was probably the most consistent contestant. He has a great stage presence and I really enjoyed watching him.

Dilana gets a good deal out of being second. Gilby said he would write and produce an album for her. Dave volunteered to play on it. Dilana probably is better off as a solo artist.

At the end of the show, Lukas performed with Supernova and I thought they sounded pretty good.

Now that Supernova has picked their lead man, what do you think about their chocie?

All the performers put on a good show. Here are my thoughts:

Janelle won the fans choice award and got 25,000 dollars from the fans.

Mike Boogie won Big Brother All-stars. I think he deserved it. He played an excellent game.

For coming in second, Erika got 50 thousand dollars - not something to sneeze at.

Also, the Dr. Will - Mike Boogie phone calls were fun to watch…
