A little Bummed… Phil Sent Packing in Week 4 of Rockstar

Apparently, I liked Phill a lot more than the guys in Supernova. I thought for sure that Zayra would go home, but my wife Jill thought they might send home Phil.

Jill was right.

Anyway, Patrice put on a performance that could have earned her an encore the night before. Hopefully, she keeps that up, because I enjoy her singing. On the other hand…

When in the world are they going to send Zayra home?

Oh well, it’s still fun to watch…

Week 4 Rockstar Supernova Performance Night - Just End it Now

I am real busy this week, so I am going to make this quick. They should just stop the show now and let Dilana front the group. Every week I think to myself, “She should get the encore”. Dilana just seems perfect for the group.

As for the rest of the singers, Lukas, Storm, and Dana had strong performances and everyone else could have done better.

Later…

Jenny Packs her Bags in Week 3 of Rockstar Supernova

I was a little surprised that Jenny was sent home, but she did have the worst performance of the bottom three tonight.

After tonight, I am not sure what to think of Dana. She has made big improvements and tonight had her best performance of the competition. I just don’t know if she can do that again. It will be interesting to see what she does next week.

I was a bit surprised by the encore choice this evening. Magni??? I mean yes, he has been getting better, but Magni? I really thought Lukas or Phil would get the encore. Not sure what their criteria is for choosing the encore, but fortunately we watched it on DVR so we fast forwarded through Magni’s performance.

It is pretty interesting watching the performers get better each week. It will be fun to see what next brings.

Rockstar Supernova Week 3

Last night the rockers were pretty good all around. In my opinion, there weren’t any horrible performances. However, there were four performances that stood out to me:

1. Dilana - Zombie
2. Phil - White Rabbit
3. Lukas - Let’s Spend the Night Together
4. Patrice - Helter Skelter

Dilana is phenomenal. Lukas looks so comfortable on stage, it’s like he already is fronting the band. To me Lukas and Dilana are the front runners. However, Phil keeps getting better every week and I think the guys in the band really like him.

Here is my quick synopsis of the show:

Patrice (Helter Skelter) - Excellent performance. I would like to see her drop her guitar and just sing, but she is still one of the top 5 in my book.

Josh (Come As You Are)- I like Josh, but he doesn’t seem right for the band. Did a good job singing Nirvana, but not a knockout performance like Jordis and Marty had last year singing Nirvana.

Storm (Just What I Needed) - Ummm… Let’s see how can I put this… Her singing is ok, she’s actually probably right behind my top 5 singing wise, but I am not overly impressed with her as a “rocker”. And errr… Storm’s performance style is shall we say “risque”.

Lukas (Let’s Spend The Night Together) - Lukas is awesome. Did a really nice rearrangement of the song to suit his hard rocking style. He might get the encore for that performance.

Jill (All Right Now) - She is a fairly good singer, but I don’t see her fitting in with the band. She also seemed to yell the song a little too much.

Ryan (Fortunate Son) - He sang really well. His performance style is a bit forced and I just don’t see him fronting Rockstar Supernova.

Phil (White Rabbit) - Jason Newsted played bass during Phil’s performance. Phil is getting better each week. He did an excellent job interacting with Jason and he is getting much better at performing. If his performance style gets up to par with his singing he could easily wind up fronting the band. One other thing about Phil is he looks a lot like a childhood friend of mine, which is another reaon I kind of like him.

Dana (It’s My Life) - She could win American Idol. She really has a great voice, but she doesn’t fit the band at all. They might keep her around another week, just because Ryan is so clearly not right for this band as well.

Toby (Runaway Train) - Toby was ok. To me this was his worst performance. I hope he kicks it back up a notch, because he seems like a really nice guy and he is definitely a good singer.

Magni (Plush) - Solid performance. He is getting better every week. I wonder if he was bad the first week, because of nerves?

Zayra (Everybody Hurts) - Phenomenal singing. She’s just not right for this band.

Jenny (Drive) - Not a good performance for her. She will probably be saved by the fact that she has been much better than this the rest of the time.

Dilana (Zombie) - Very intense, strong, excellent performance. Dilana is from here in Houston (3 of the performers are from Texas) so I have to root for her some.

The bottom three at the end of the show was Dana, Ryan and Jenny. Which was really no surprise. I think of those three either Ryan or Dana will go home. As I said earlier, Dana has an awesome voice and would have been much better suited for American Idol. Ryan just doesn’t have what they are looking for performance wise.

I think Ryan will go home, but I could be wrong. If Ryan does go home that will be the third man to go home, with all the women still in it. Which makes me ask the question:

“Are they looking for a female to front the band or just the best singer?”

Anyway, my vote for encore goes to Lukas, Phil, or Dilana. We shall see…

Chris is gone after Rockstar Week 2 Elimination

Did you see Rockstart Supernova last night? After Zayra let us all down by singing the same song for her elimination that she sang for her performance night song, I thought for sure she was going home. Prior to that I thought either Chris or her would go home, but I couldn’t believe she sang the same song and they kept her!

It is unlikely that Zayra will last much longer, but it seems like Tommy Lee and the guys enjoy interacting with her. So I guess it’s not too surprising that she is still around.

My guess yesterday turned out to be right, but how hard was it to guess that Jill, Chris, and Zayra would be in the bottom three. Jill, Chris and Zayra had very lackluster performances on Tuesday. The truth is that prior to last night, I thought Jill was very average. Last night, Jill did an excellent job singing. Maybe she is a better singer than I thought she was.

Anyway, that’s it for this week’s episode. What do you think about CBS not showing much interaction between the rockers in the house? Last year, it might have affected the way people voted, do you think that’s why they aren’t showing the interaction in the house too much?

Week 2 Performances for Rockstar SuperNova

This week most everyone had a better performance than the previous week with a few exceptions. I have to say now that we are into the second week of performances I feel like there are maybe 5 competitors that seem to “fit” the band. This doesn’t mean they are the best singers in the bunch (although they are all in the top 8 from a vocal perspective). The rockers I think fit the band the best are:

1. Dilana
2. Lukas
3. Toby
4. Patrice
5. Phil

Dilana probably had the best performance of the night last night, which means she is yet again a top candidate for the encore. If she doesn’t get the encore, then I think Toby will get it.

As for the bottom three. My bottom three would be:

1. Jill
2. Zayra
3. Chris

I could see anyone of them going home tonight, because I don’t think any of them fit this band at all. I could also see Ryan in the bottom three or maybe Dana. Dana has tons of talent and at 22 would be a great candidate for American Idol, but I don’t think she is right for this band.

Anyway, tonight we will find out who goes home. My prediction is that it definitely won’t be anyone in my top 5. Otherwise, it could be anyone (probably Zayra or Chris).

Rockstar Matt Goes Home

I really liked Matt, he seemed like a really decent human being. But man did he ever choose the wrong song to sing on elimination night. I mean “Duran, Duran”? Not that it was bad or anything, but it certainly was NOT the kind of song you would expect Supernova to play. I thought they still might kick out Chris, but that didn’t happen.

Rockstar Supernova - Week 1

You know that Jill and I watch American Idol. Well, last year when MSN Rocsktar Inxs kicked off we were a little skeptical, but it turned out to be a lot of fun to watch.

My personal favorites from the show last year were Marty, Mig and Jordis (the first half of the season). Marty was probably the best rocker from a talent aspect. In fact, one of the reasons I thought they didn’t pick Marty is because quite frankly I think Marty would have overshadowed the rest of the group. Marty’s stage presence is larger than life. On the other hand we loved Mig. I wanted him to win, because I thought he seemed nice and he was possibly the best singer of the bunch. All in all the singing talent on Rockstar Inxs is better than American Idol, but you are also dealing with more polished veterans and it’s rock not pop music.

Just to give you an idea of how good the talent is, I think that if Chris Daughtry were in this competiton to be part of Supernova he would go home sometime in the first four weeks. My guess would be week 3.

Now on to last night’s show…

Chirs Pierson had to sing Roxxanne and it was the worst performance of the night. It’s really, really, hard to sing a Sting song. You have to have a lot of range and quite frankly you have to be named Sting to sing a Sting song.

The best performance of the night was Lukas Rossi, who sang Billy Idol’s rebel yell. You don’t have to be Billy Idol to sing Rebel Yell and Lukas was phenomenal. Of all the rockers Lukas looks like he would fit in best with the band.

My second favorite performance was by Zayra Alvarez. She has a very unique voice (so do some of the others) and her performance blew me away.

If last year’s Rockstar is any indication, this week probably won’t tell us much about who is actually going to win the competition, but Lukas is out to a clear early lead.

Tonight is the elimination show. Even though it’s really hard to predict, here are my bottom three candidates:

1. Chris Pierson
2. Jill Gioia
3. Magni Asgeirsson

I expect either Chris or Magni to go home. We shall see…
